Snowfall - It could get pretty tough out there

The cover in the CRP is good now, those native grass stand and bounce back better than brome or reeds canary. That type of cover is flat, and not much of cattails here. Saw a good number of birds. Shot 3, one was full of beans. I saw maybe 3 dozen in the adjacent fields looking to eat when...

    Change of plans

We should be good for now, still another week of good weather is predicted here. One issue is that most of the waterways and smaller parcels will not have much standing cover remaining. That reed canary grass flatens-out and doesnt stand back-up like switchgrass. Any public usually has better...

    Worth a search?

If it is dead, it might be a hard find, if it isn't and his legs are good, it could be anywhere now. If alive, likely a reluctant flier, but be ready! If not far away, walk it again, just maybe....or a limit of new ones could be waiting for you!

    Things are looking decent.

Does it detect lead or just steel (or anyother non-tox). I borrowed one from a friend when I was thinking about getting one, it wouldn't reliably detect lead if I remember right....I didn't buy one after the test drive. It did say on the website not for that purpose. Those thighs are so hard...

    Pheasant etiquette question

He had a dog, he would be just fine. You could have been the the beneficiary in that equation.

    Pheasant etiquette question

Were you in a party hunting state or how were you going to help him get his bird?

    Things are looking decent.

I cleaned my birds this morning. The first one yesterday, the feathers flew on the first shot, but he was still going, so I gave him a second helping of 5s and a bigger plume of feathers and down he went. Cleaning him, I found 15 pellets just filleting him out and 3 more cleaning the meat...

    Things are looking decent.

After more early season snow than we have had for quite sometime, the last week's temps have much of it gone now. It looked like a herd of hogs have been in my food plots. Saw good numbers and brought 3 home with good dog work and decent shooting. It felt about like an opener again as it had...

Does anyone read the PF Journals?

In the Summer 2024 Journal, there is an article that starts on page 30. Anyone with a bird dog, read that and try not to get wet eyes.

Does anyone read the PF Journals?

In the most recent one, it had a lot of short articles on chapters all over the nation, the one that I liked the most was on the Nobles County MN chapter. They have funded (have to assume they had partners) 50 parcel acquisitions since they began in 1986. How frickin impressive is that kind of...

    Change of plans

Our NW Iowa snow has receded a lot now. I have not been out into the cover. Some of it, like the reeds canary grass is likely flat and done for the season. Switch grass could be standing back up now, will get a peek tomorrow. Guessing you are on the road now. If coming back and you find...

    Change of plans

I am not sure that is how most rental contacts work, but the do differ. Some actually address the hunting rights, they might not go with the ground being rented. Most, I think you would be safe with either the renter or the owner, but not always. I have had renters give permission and the...

    2025 gear review...what worked and what didn't?

Did you heat the fabric with a hair dryer, so it really soaked in? I re-waxed my double tin chaps 2 years ago and I think they will still stand-up in the corner by themselves. Used the Filson wax. Need to re-wax my LL Bean hunting coat some weekend that I am not hunting.
