I don't really like just pounding cattails, I prefer the trees, but in January cattails is probably the best call.

I just drove to nearest town, 20 miles away, and was reminded how heavy the cattle pastures are here…1/2 the land? Saw lots of birds…here, there, most anywhere there’s some cover…

Being so warm, birds are kinda back to pre-winter habits, but moderately bunched…some cattails will get pushed today, but smaller sloughs…I’m not THAT mad at the birds to march into a big slough!
CRP grass has been good…

Last year I did some scouting, and I did find some good private ground the let me on for free, because I wasn't going to pay these guys anything. Honey this is expensive enough, without paying to get on the land...Being so warm, birds are kinda back to pre-winter habits, but moderately bunched…some cattails will get pushed today, but smaller sloughs…I’m not THAT mad at the birds to march into a big slough!

I looked at extended forecast, currently no snow going out 10-14 days…could change, but if we get close to February not having had winter stress yet, days getting longer, etc, could be a boon for carryover again…hunting was good wed/thur…2 new guys rolled in, figuring out their idiosyncrasies, physical constraints, dogs, etc…working out pretty good…both auto mechanics for decades, hearing may be less than ideal, but pretty good shots, they have dogs with some physical issues, but it’s all working…local farmer invited us yesterday to join him and 2 guys from MN he met at a steakhouse nearby 2 years ago…never hunted with them…excellent hunters and dogs…was a great time, hope to do it again in the future…one of them knows a good pal of mine who hunted with me here in November…small world…helps a lot adding a few extra guys…the pheasants were winning yesterday up until that point!

My cousin is a great shooter, as is his wife, she’s in MN Trapshooting HOF. They lived in Lakeville until 2 years ago…could be them, but pic looks a bit iffy to me. I’ll think about it…pretty sure it was this place? I’m sure you’re right..,

That’s his vest, I know that, and it looks just like him, especially the dead bird falling! Glasses and hat, too…he shoots Beretta’s…oh, yeah, bird or 2 in his vest…telltale sign.,,that’s him.
