Started out 17 degrees and calm…now, at noon, calm and 30’sh? Wouldn’t have expected today best weather day of the past week of hunting…partly sunny…birds holding in fairly stout cover…3 of us have 4…one lost bird we’re gonna go after from a different angle…I’ve shot and recovered 2 with the red label 28…15 and 25 yard shots? Roughly? Didn’t move from landing zone…yesterday I carried ultralight 12 gauge, windy and hunted some bigger cover…worked well. More to follow…gorgeous day, especially for dogs…👍 earthquake reported here this am…2.8 magnitude…could be from the bark of the 28!!!!! Coincidence? No way!!!

2 more with the 28, one a 40 yard shot, +\-…didn’t move, but alive…shot at it twice, hit it first shot, flailing midair, shot 2nd time immediately after first shot, landed in pasture…2nd bird was pointed by Merle, down in slough, kind of a hole..ascended at rapid rate, hit it with 2nd shot, disappeared over hill, Merle followed…a bit of a chase…Merle got it, much fun! Shot 8 this past week with the 28 I have with, recovered them all…past 2 seasons, combined, I’ve shot 15 and recovered them all…1 oz #5 lead, roughly 1200-1250 fps…170 pellets vs 215 out of 12 gauge 1.25 oz load…my 12 gauge is typically IC, my 28’s are either M/M or IM/F….at 30 yards I suspect pellet count on large pizza tray about the same, as is velocity…my results convince me that the 28 is just fine at reasonable ranges…all the people I know who actually use a 28 tend to agree, typically emphatically. Maybe everyone who chimes in with an opinion has a decent amount of personal experience to support their point of view…dunno! I love my 28’s…love carrying them!

I didn’t plan on using my 28 necessarily, but one of the guys who arrived wed forgot ammo, I had 4 boxes 12 gauge ammo, I lent him 3…he was going to drive to town and buy some, I said no biggy, I’d carry my 28 more on the trip…happy I did! Like the M/M choking for the red label..,thought about having Briley make an IM tube, but it’s $100, and probably getting too anal about it…M/F is probably fine…I’ll do more patterning…👍

BB will you quit rubbing it in!!!!!! So jealous! I'm sitting here working on nebraska videos, so getting my fix but come on dude!o_O That being said dont stop posting!

Yeah, I get it…I’m watching my buddies hunt a small chunk of grass as the sun sets…35 degrees, calm conditions…windy tomorrow, colder…might feel like late fall? Mid-fall? Pretty nice, no doubt I’m gonna be here…half my dad’s duck camp pals died by early 60’s…I hear lots of reasons my pals can’t come, or stay a few days longer, yada yada..probably real reasons in their minds…that’s fine…not gonna twist arms, I want each guy to want to be here 110%. Solo is good, too…nobody to worry about…🍻👍

I hear ya, I'm headed to South Carolina to chase woodcock next weekend. Gotta do it while I can. I fall to the mantra of "I don't have time to do this or that" that isn't true I just don't take the time. I'm trying to change that script. I'm not old, only 57, but doing what i want, while still managing having to work......Keep it up BB!

Well done Matt D!

Ah ruger red label! For the life of me I couldn’t figure that one out all I could come up with was Red Ryder lever action.

I'm gonna cook your recipe and bring the cockpot to the gun club this weekend. I think maybe you meant 1 cup of wild rice instead of 1 pound? 1 pound uncooked wild rice is a lot after you add the water!
No, I do a 1 lb bag…about $5 or $6…you’re right, a healthy amount, but the Dutch oven is pretty big! Mine is, anyway…the pheasant concoction fills it about 1/2 way up the side, add the rice it’s almost all the way to the top…I’ve used 1.5 lbs before…many times…

There’s probably nothing wrong with less rice, it’s a matter of what you’re after. Serving the pheasant concoction over egg noodles is very good, too, but it’s not a one pot dish at that point.

It’s all about the fit.

You and me both, though I’m turning 59 in a month. I’m not going to be on my death bed wishing I had worked more!
