My favorite time of the year is a four day hunt after Christmas. Hard to explain, it's not easy hunting. Birds are pressured, weather is varied, but there's nothing better than me and the dogs hunting alone. Not to get verbose, but it kinda cleanses the soul. Spending time alone with the dogs is about my favorite few days of the year.
Unfortunately this time a blizzard blew in after the first day. No travel warnings in effect for southern mn, I still thought about going this morning. 830 am the snow was falling heavy. I thought about all I read on the birds just trying to survive an all day storm. I passed on going. Me and the dogs still had a big time. We took a nap, walked all over the frozen lake, watched some football. Made pheasant chili from some freezer birds. On one hand I wished we coulda hunted. On the other, I'm still glad we got to leave the world behind and spend time together away from the hustle and bustle. Maybe we'll get another day hunting this season. Either way I'm lucky just to spend some time with these dogs.
