CO Opener Plans and Feedback

Can't believe we are about a week away from the season opener. Post here what your plans are for the CO opener this year. Also feel free to post your feedback on how you did. Can't wait to get out there even if it ends up being an off year.

I am going with 5 friends/family members out to Yuma. I have my 2 year old GSP and my 4 year old pointing lab. We get access to a farmer's secondary house. He is a family friend that I met last year. The house actually sits adjacent to some walk in access. He also allows us to hunt his private land. The private land is ok, but the house is just flat out awesome to use for the weekend. This will be our second year staying there. I will post up how we did. We will be hunting both Saturday and Sunday.

Good Luck to everyone and be safe!!! -

I was out driving around Yuma today. Doesn't look as bad as I thought, at least the areas that I have access to. This will be the first year in many that I don't have a dog, at least until January when he finishes his training. Did see a couple birds. Looking forward to getting out there!

My dad and I haven't decided if we are going to the platte for quail or the wia for pheasants. Maybe a little of both since we have a three day weekend. Hopefully the weather cools down a little.

Whoa be me....sitting at home doing honey do's as my English Setter heals her leg. Hopefully the following week we will get out there. Tread lightly and shoot straight.

SDT - I am in the same boat! ;) Dakota is healing up. I took him to the vet on Thursday, and they said he is looking good, but the sutures have to stay in for 2 more weeks!

This weekend, I have to finish up painting a room. Next weekend ... hmmm. :) It hurt my heart last night to turn down a trip to Nebraska today.

Dakota may have to stay at grandma's house, since he would not be happy with me going hunting without him. I'll probably take our 1 year old next Sunday.

Me and my pointing lab will be heading out to Burlington to particpate in the Rotary Club's Rooster Roundup. First time doing this so not sure what to expect.

My family and I are going to try the rooster roundup for the first time. I've been wanting to try it out for years. Good Luck

Good Luck to everyone heading out to the Burlington Rooster Roundup. What a great program! Let us know how you do. Ive heard its a little crowded. We have decided to head to Nebraska this weekend, hopefully less crowded!!

Dang it! I should have know that, thanks for the heads up. I must have my rooster blinders on and forget about everything else. Hope I can still get on some land....

Not heading for opening weekend this year. Saving up for the following weekend because my son and I are heading up to pheasant heaven, South Dakota. We have the opportunity to hunt some private land and I will try and work my magic and network some more places to hunt and maybe check out the public areas.

I will hit up the Yuma area later in the season.

Colorado Opener

This will be my first year here in CO, moved here from Louisiana last May. I have committed to going to KS for the opener with some of my wife's family, going to Goodland area. Have heard it may not be a good year out there but I gave my word I would go.

Will be anxious to see how folks do here. Best luck to all stay safe and have fun

Kit Carson

Heading out to Kit Carson on opening Sunday. Will be tough going with my knee surgery, but I have some friends that will be more than happy to take my 9 year old son and dog when my knee gives out. The weekend after that, I'm heading back home to SD for some deer and pheasant hunting with my dad, wife, both sons. It's a family tradition that always pisses my mom off when we are late to Thanksgiving because we are hunting.

I did the round up last year. I only hunted the lands opening weekend. There where a lot of hunters but there was also a lot of properties to hunt. I would say 99 % of the huntable land is cut corn, so plenty of room for large groups. I hunt solo and no dog so I hit lands that had cover. I limited out on day 2 hunting by a farm house that had some great cover.

This year I am just going to hunt WIA and use the money saved for gas! As a heads up there is a WIA area north of Burlington surrounded by Round up land. Saw quite a few birds in that WIA last year.

round-up

last year there were over 400 hunter that signed up , this year 300 .
Birds are down and so is the cover ; crops came in early this year so there is alot of re-planting going on-less cover , but there are still birds ;maybe just have to hunt an hr or two longer to get a bird.

Plus one for the Rooster Roundup. I'd been thinking about joining in past years but didn't. I had an invitation to join some folks so I am-heading out Friday morning to scout.

And SDT-good luck getting your setter healed up. Let me know if you want some midweek company later in November.

Good luck to all!!!! I will sit this one out!! Hunted 2 opening days in my life and I am just not an opening day person I guess!!! Looking forward to all your stories and pic's!!!! Be safe!!!!

How bad is it?

I've been debating whether to head out this weekend or not. The last opener I hunted was just me and my dog and we basically got ran out of a field by a larger group. This was not in Colorado incidentally but it seems far too common.

If I go I'll only be hunting WIA spots. Are there trucks at every spot? What should I expect? The only spot I have any good intel on is in Yuma county. Do the crowds drop off dramatically after opening weekend?

I can do the opener or wait a couple weeks and use the gas money I would have spent to go to Nebraska where I found good cover but not alot of birds. I'd appreciate any thoughts.
