In a world that often doesn't make any sense thanks for teaching me that this always would. I'll miss you buddy and when I walk the fields in the years to come, I know you'll be right along side us until we meet again.

Rest in peace.

PTM,

Sorry to hear of your loss. I know how difficult it is to lose your father and best friend. I lost my dad May 11th, 2014. My dad instilled in me the passion of hunting at an early age. The days afield with him are some of my fondest memories.

I typically travel solo to SD each year. I pack his ole Winchester model 12 and take it with me. It seems to bring me closer and reflect on times together. I will take it out and shoot it a time or two hoping to get a rooster for him. :-)

That is one heavy gun and kicks like a mule...lol. My dad started hunting with it at age 10...my dad was one tough bird.

Love you Dad!

I'm sorry for your father's passing! There is no way to fill that void. Many of us here have already walked that lonely path and we feel your loss! God Bless. Cherish the memories and remember he gave you such a great gift that you know he will share with you every step you take in the field!!!

My dad got me started also. And to this day I would rather hunt with him than anyone else. He's still outwalks most people but there was a year where he suffered an injury and had to miss the whole season. It was not a real fun season for me either not having him there. And he was too proud to ride on a gator or fourwheeler. Cant blame him I guess. Sorry for your loss. Shoot off a round for him when you hit the field.

Patrick, though I never met him I know he was a great guy just like you. The apple fell directly 'neath the tree.

So sorry for your loss. Probably like most of us on here, I started hunting with my dad. He took me out with him as a youngster and I shot my first bunny with an old single shot .410 at age 6. First squirrels with his old single shot .22. My first pheasant with an old Stevens squareback 12 ga. pump I bought for $25 from the local hardware store and still own. My dad's still alive, but suffers from dementia and lives in the State Vets Home in King, WI. He hasn't been able to hunt or fish with us in some time and that hurts. Deer camp, spring fishing and bird hunting outings with family just aren't the same, as there is something/one missing. He'll turn 85 when I'm in Iowa on this year's pheasant hunt.

My condolences Patrick. Thanks for sharing his memory with us.

I am sorry to hear of your loss.

7 years ago, my father died. He really enjoyed pheasant hunting. I had him cremated. I took some of his ashes and mixed it with shot and took him on one last pheasant hunt in NW Iowa.

That hunt was one that I will never forget. My two brothers, their sons, and a cousin that often hunted with my father traveled to Iowa. We cooked lunch on the tailgate of the truck. We shared stories of hunting with my father. After lunch, we held a brief ceremony and fired his ashes over the field. Somewhere, I have a photo of us simultaneously firing.

I carry an empty shell in my hunting vest that held his ashes.

We killed 11 pheasants in that field after the ceremony.

I think about my father every day.

My condolences Patrick. It's been 21 years ago for me and it still hurts when I think about it.

He gave me his Model 12 about 5 years before ne passed away and I took it pheasant hunting that first fall at LaCreek NWR in South Dakota---took a limit of birds that weekend. When I informed that I had done real good with it his reply is still with me whenever I hunt---"I sighted that gun in a LONG time ago" Indeed he had.
