Amazing to me to see so many complain. I did not hunt this weekend due to my occupation. But if u ever get to just sit back and watch what happens on opening weekend. How is everyone supposed to take home a limit?????? I watched most traffic all day while I was working in the field. Its quite ridiculous what we do as people. enuf said!!!!!Every parcel of ground private or wia is pounded all day. One group leaves another group comes in. Better to let the rat race do their thing and go away. The true hunters wait for the crops to come out and wait for better conditions. This weekend was not ideal pheasant hunting conditions. Sorry to say. This morning on my drive to the field I seen as many shootable birds as it was thursday before everyone came to town. On a side note everyone from the city wants to know why farm people get so pissy when they come to town. Some advice. Corn harvest is still going on. Suvs with out of county plates stopped in the road parked in the road etc. It was terrible annoying saturday with people not knowing how to drive in the country. How are semis supposed to get around u????? Or me I had to follow a group of happy jolly city hunters riding on a tailgate following so I could make my living. U guys need to think about these things. Would u like me to stand in front of ur lawnmower when ur wanting to go play golf??????? Or u need to get to point a and b at a certain time in the big city and u have a buggy pulling horses 4 wide in ur interstates??????? Just my thoughts. OH and by the way its easy to tell city from country with all the orange!!!!!!!!!!

I guess we know who had to work all day. :D

And I am a true hunter as most here are so tilt your nose back down. Next year we will all wait until you say its OK. :D

Please do let us know when the real hunter hunting season begins. Me and my buddies had a nice time this weekend so I'm sorry to hear our presence was unwanted. If there's additional things we can do to avoid your disdain in the future please advise. So far I have
1. Dont hunt opening weekend
2. Dont wear orange
3. Dont stop in the middle of the road
4.

smart upland hunters wear orange

OH and by the way its easy to tell city from country with all the orange!!!!!!!!!!

Dude... it is fine to inform and encourage people to respect those trying to work the fields and roads, but this quote is plain stupid. You may not mind getting patterned by your buddy because he can't tell the difference between your Carhartts and the switchgrass, but smart hunters, country and not, wear orange. You need to be called out on this because I would hate to think that your little rant could cause one kid to get shot because he thinks he is being more "country" by not wearing orange. Did you ever take hunter safety? Review incident reports? How much have you actually hunted with people wearing orange or not? Did you notice the difference with orange? Misguided comments and ideas like yours cause accidents.

Guess what, plenty of your neighbors appreciate visitors, those towns need business. Treat 'em w/ respect, and you'll get it back. Remember the golden rule?

The point of my rant is missed by some. I have no problem that I didnt get to hunt this weekend. More than likely I will shoot more birds than most anyways. I knew the orange would ruffle the feathers. The biggest irritation I said was people complaining about no birds. When people from the city come to hunt they dont care how they are driving. Either its parked in the middle of the road driving. Driving like miss daisy down the middle of the road not watching for other people. Or its driving so flippin fast that u will about lose ur windshield so u can get to the next spot before the other idiots. For those of u that this doesnt apply to disregard. Its annoying every year the attitude I notice living in the country. Than these people can have the nerve and come on here and let us country people know how they are treated unfairly and its bs.
:D

Engpointerman, I feel your frustration. I however, happen to love reading all the sniveling reports about "no birds." Buy your small game tag, hunt the opener with the hordes, bitch and moan, and then stay home the rest of the year because Colorado has no cockbirds!

I hear ya loud-&-clear EPM!!! If the zoo/circus is annoying to us hunters, can't even begin to imagine what it must be like for all of you folk who live & work in the home territory we encroach/intrude upon...
Don't blame you one bit for a little crochety-ness when the buttons get pushed.

Just one measly little example from this past wknd: I was barreling down the road from one place to another totally aware of my peripheral surroundings with an extremely careful watch out for grain trucks/tractors, local folks or other hunters either pullin out of the drive/moseying along or flying down the crossroads (amazing how many hunters blew right past me on the crossroads totally oblivious with noses and eyes locked-on straight ahead & never even bothered looking my way, could've easily t-boned a couple of em if I wanted - and yes I did see more than one hunting truck parked in the middle of the road or two or three parked on both sides directly across from each other making it almost impossible for a car to pass thru on the road in between, much less a piece of farm equipment)...Came upon a group of farmers/ranchers in the road ahead of me who were driving cattle my way with a truck bringin up the rear & 4 wheelers out to the sides & ahead to contain. Quickly waved & made up an impromptu "No, No, No, Not Me, I'm backing out & going the other way" motion to the farmer on the lead 4 wheeler out to my side, then wheeled it around & went back the way I came from to go a 3-sided & 3-mile county road pass around & not cause pandemonium to break out in their workday. Got an ear-to-ear grin & a big ol' thumbs up out of the farmer on that one as I did a 180 & was leaving. I wonder how many guys would have slowed down and still plowed on thru or just sat there in the middle of the road & made the farmers try to push cattle all around them???

I do happen to disagree with you on wearing safety orange though, I for one won't leave the truck without it (at least a hat at a bare minimum & usually protective shooting glasses too). There are way too many people running around out there with guns that I don't know at all (what happens if some scary yea-hoo pulls up & enters the wia about the time I'm halfway done or on my way back thru), AND the Dick Cheney thing can happen even to experienced hunters & the best of friends and family a whole lot easier than we think if not careful/cautious to the point of near overkill (especially in a wild breakout cluster-flush)...Can't you just pretend it's a purty punkin patch??? :p

Wow, tell us how you really feel?

I really think it is a two way street don't you?

So for just grins and fits how about no one goes pheasant hunting or any type of hunting and doesn't not spend their own hard earned money that Obama has not taken away yet in yours or any other small town. So, no motels/hotels get booked, no gas stations, no restaurants being eat at, NOTHING!!

How long do you suppose some small towns in rural Colorado or rural anywhere would survive?

I am retired Air Force and was born and raised in Texas. I grew up hunting deer, quail, dove and turkey. Not to many roosters down my way. However, my papa would always take me out of school for one day early so we could make it down to the deer lease on opening weekend. The small Texas towns thrive on hunters and all the $$ that were spent.

I can tell you what. When I am out hunting anywhere, I have a trash bag to put my trash in, I don't throw it on the ground. I don't clean my birds in the field. I don't hunt on property that I don't have access too....

I would like to spend my $$$ here in Colorado where I live now. I retired from active duty last year and my kids are still in high school. However, I won't spend a damn dime if farmers and ranchers out in rural Colorado towns want to automatically assume that all folks from the Front Range cities are a bunch of jackasses because we are not.

I do understand that farmers and ranchers have jobs to do like harvest and such, however talk to the Division of Wildlife about the dates of opening weekend such or the weatherman. Folks cannot have their cake and eat it too.

Thanks hen,hen and winchester 21. Retrvrman if it doesnt pertain to u dont be violated. As far as the orange it alls good. I just knew it would ruffle some feathers. As bad as me having to dodge vehicles and the riff raff with any opening weekend. Just trying my best to give my best description of what it looks like on the other end of the stick. I dont care if my motels go broke I have a house to stay in nightly. As far as restaurants it gets old to eat at after awhile. So I really dont care how u spend ur money if u cant respect what goes on in a farming community. I think hen, hens post probly explains things better than me. But there are alot of people out there that dont get it
as mentioned before the people who do pay attention. This doesnt pertain to u. Just heard about 10 more stories of disrespectful city people doing dumb stuff. As I read on here often people wonder why they dont have access. These are the things that cause tensions. I dont even know how to reply on the dow statement. Sometime harvest is done sometimes its not. Just a common courtesy to let the farmers get their chit done so as a group more people have a chance to access private property. By the way I do wear orange just not as much as others. :D

Bitter much?

Bitter party of one, your table is now ready. Your neighbors who own the hotels and restaurants seem to not share your view of the outsiders coming to town and leaving some cash. Our little party of four was thanked at each stop.
I have been reading your posts for awhile and always respected your viewpoints as knowledgeable. However, the orange comment and the I don't care if the hotels and restaurants go out of business comment were stupid and self centered.

Yup lots of idiots out there on opening day, don't think Ive ever seen so many hunters around your part the world. I caught 3 groups huntin without permission on some of my private they just didn't seem to care, Its hard enough to get access without Idiots on places they shouldn't be.

Those dang farmers

My dog took off after some Antleope this past Sunday. He turned up at a farm house and Robert called the number on his tag and I had my dog back within an hour. Thanks Robert! I find people out east to be friendly and helpful. I broke down several years ago and Bob towed me around ten miles into Flagler. Thanks Bob! Imagine having all that traffic driving thru your neighborhood one weekend and parking all up and down the streets. I guarantee there would be some rants from my nieghbors and maybe even me. Thanks country folks for putting up with us and we appreciate your help and hospitality and will try to be better guests.

Dudes some of you need to chill, take a step back & genuinely try "walkin a mile or two in another man's shoes" for a change...There is often good reason for local invites versus rejection, & making nice with the locals instead of treating them like enemies to be conquered is just downright common-sense courtesy/respect, not to mention in your own best interest. I can usually strike up a friendship with locals & farmers quite easily if given half the chance, but too much failure on many hunters part who have already been there be4 me failing to take this kind of gentlemanly tack often costs me any initial chance to even shake a hand or get so much as a simple nod of the head acknowledging my presence. Going toe-to-toe like a banty rooster with the locals who help make it possible for pheasants to be there in the first place ain't ever gonna help matters any. Just my two cents...

Did you read the post that started this? It was the local fellows disdain for the city boys that prompted all this hubbub. I agree that acting like you have some sense is what everyone should be doing regardless your location. Common courtesy is expected in downtown NY or Holyoke. He went way over the line in the original post and follow-up post. He made a point to include everybody in his rant with the orange comment and the restaurant/hotel comment.
I sincerely respect the people who make a living on the land. It takes a great deal of grit, business acumen, and guts to make it in this day and age. I make a point of respecting boundaries, livestock, roadways, and generally staying out of the way of people trying to go about their daily lives while I am out for recreation. Hopefully the money we spent on our weekend trip stays in the local economy and makes somebodies bottom line a bit better.

I did not take anything personally as I am sure Roger can attest after meeting me this weekend as to what kind of person and hunter I am.

However, I took offense because you seemed to attack folks from the city. When you say city, where and what do you mean?

The only reason I don't live on a farm or ranch is because I spent over 20yrs in the Air Force and my family and I are firmly planted where we are for now. I have not had the chance or opportunity to have been brought up ranching or farming. I have lived some of life in the "country" like "country folks"....I don't consider myself a total city slicker or whatever.

I will use the analogy then of the Tea Party or the Wall Street occupiers. So there are always a few nuts or idiots, oxygen thiefs and just plain dumba$$@$ in every so called group. Some people said there were racists in the Tea Party, the wall street occupiers had anarchists and now out of town hunters that are not from the local community are city folks who don't care about anything or anyone but themselves. Is that all true, I don't think so.

Is that what you were trying to say? I just want to be sure.

I can't say that I empathize with you because I don't know what it is like to be you and I don't live your life nor have I.

I would have the attitude that for every POS city person or whatever you called them, there are more folks that are not like that and are good hunters, dads, fathers, brothers, grandpas, uncles, etc....

Lets not classify the "whole" group and give labels. I still believe in giving people the benefit of the doubt at first. Fool me once shame on me, fool me twice shame on you I say.

We all know that its the folks from the Springs that are causing all the problems out east!!! ;)

Engpointerman,

I get your frustrations completely! The good news is that opening weekend is over! The crowds won't be nearly as bad! (I hope) And from here on out you will most likely be seeing more responsible, respectful, and dedicated pheasant hunters. No matter what your hunting for and where ever you go there are other hunters no matter weather they are country folks or city folks that are jacking things up for the average hunter! The shaty thing is that ranchers and farmers get a bad taste in their mouth after dealing with a few idiots and the next thing you know their land isn't open to the public anymore, that's what scares me! I like most of us am an average guy with no land of my own to hunt and i'm very grate for the access that I do have with the WIA's, I hope these areas are around for a long time and even grow in popularity! Unfortunately, if farmers/ranchers read your first post, or go through what you did, or hear about bad incidents with disrespectful out of area hunters they will opt their land out of the program.
I just hope you and others in your position can just see it for what it is...... It was opening weekend and their are some idiots out there. It happens once a year and hopefully gets better and never worse!!!!!

I know you were just poking with your comment about the orange, but....Lol...... Don't hate me for wearing a little orange, I've been peppered once in the back while wearing orange and twice wearing camo hunting ducks in Utah. Not cool at all...... I'll stick with a little orange and hope some jarkarse will care more about me than shooting some rooster sitting next to the road???
