It's that time of year when I really start paying attention to the weather. Got on to weather.com today and man, Opening Weekend looks pretty good! Chance of rain in Southwest Kansas next Thursday and temps are in the upper 50's and lows in the upper 20's for Opener. I know it's Kansas and things could change, but it got me pretty excited.

60% chance of rain Sunday in the Southwest where I'm headed. That'll thin out the hunting crowd.... Give some of us breathing room.

I was dreaming of hunting last night - could feel the shotgun buck in my shoulder.... I'm absolutely worthless at work today.

Western KS is really needing some moisture. Did a youth hunt near Garden City on Saturday and the dogs were really having trouble scenting the birds. Really dry and dusty. Watching cattle in the fields, they were kicking up clouds of dust just walking along.

Hope Thursday's forecast for some moisture is spot on!

We experienced the same thing in C KS. Lost a couple of birds, one runner that would've normally been a pretty easy find for the dogs, got away. Yes, we need the moisture badly!

Hopefully the prediction for rain hits Thursday and/or Friday. Looks to be shaping up for a really nice weekend.

We need moisture bad. Some farmers are getting nervous having hunters in the fields with the extreme fire danger. I took a group out for the youth hunt Sat the dry dusty conditions was really hard on the dogs. We watered them often and even at that they had trouble finding downed birds.

I have mentally checked out already. not going to get much done at work this week

A good 3 in of snow on my deck & coming down hard with more of the same the next couple days. Hope I can get out Sunday or Monday for my trip to C KS.

I am hoping for cold but not frigid temps...if precip, then snow, NOT RAIN...I DON'T LIKE TO DRIVE ON GUMBO, SLICK ROADS and sliding all over the place and getting inches of mud caked on my tires, NO THANKS!!

Heading out down around Dodge on 18 Nov thru 22 Nov....checked the weather on Accuweather and it looks like highs in low, mid 40s, not much precip and lows in teens....perfect!!!

I hear you about that gumbo, nasty stuff. Roads should be mostly dried up by the time we roll in, hopefully some moisture is present for the dogs sake. We'll be out in the SW region on Monday-Wednesday, I'll post up when we get back.

Drove around 400 miles in the Kansas rain today scouting and looking around. There is a good thunderstorm going on right now. Lots of wheat planted, in fact, lots of green fields from Wellington to near the Colorado border. I noticed very little corn and milo stubble. Got to within about 10 feet of a couple different roosters before they decided to run or fly. What were they thinking? Just breathing the fresh Kansas air gives a guy a positive outlook. I wouldn't even need to shoot a single shot on Saturday because I already had a great time. I will be out scouting and talking to farmers all day tomorrow. I always wanted to get up here a day or two early. It is a dirty job and someone has to do it.

I saw a beautiful eight point buck just ESE of Maynard's Ponderosa this afternoon. He had three nice looking girlfriends with him.

I have been driving the roads looking for pheasants and could only find these two groups in all of Ford County, sorry guys, but you may be disappointed.

Maynard, ya sure thing. You might go out there and do something terrible. I am not a deer hunter and kind of feel sorry for those poor guys. But a good cup of coffee could make me spill the beans.

I didn't see near the amount of pheasants as I thought I would even with the crops out, they are exposed and stick out like a sore thumb. I imagine there will be some good hunting on Saturday and Sunday but they will be thinned out drastically after that. Maynard, were you thinking the same?

Ah, moisture, something the Ponderosa has needed for a long time. It is 37 degrees at the moment and no rain falling. I will check the rain gauge when I feed the girls this morning, but would guess an inch. If Bilbo stays off the roads today and doesn't mud them up, they probably won't be too bad.:) The dogs will appreciate much improved scenting conditions.
