So What do you guys all do now??? Looks like I'll spend the next couple weeks cleaning up gear, repainting decoys, digging out fishing/turkey hunting stuff. Then Comes Softball and all that good stuff...

What about you guys??

Bass and crappie fishing, a few rounds of sporting clays and skeet, maybe a preserve hunt, try to keep the dog and I in shape, and a lot of day dreaming about last season and the coming season.

Trout fishing, then crappie fishing. Turkey hunting then bluegill and bass fishing! Got it all planned out

Time frame actually is working in my favor this time. I had a cardiac "event" Monday afternoon, pacemaker gave 4 x 45 joule jolts in 40 minutes. Went to the hospital, got a stent on Tuesday to clear blockage in one artery. Home with no damage! So I guess cardiac rehab for six months, to build up strength, Lots of exercise, and running the young pups, fishing with the kids, We'll try the turkeys as well. I ought to be fit by prairie grouse season.

Lots to do hunt Javies, Hunt spring turkey, Plan elk and deer ( if i get lucky in the draw) Plan hunting quail in two or three states, and pheaseants in more states. I hope:)

I will spend my time off making plans for next year working on getting dogs and hunting places ready and lined up and I have a new thing this year I have to do a therapy session with a britt of mine thanks alot spence hopefully he can get over his trauma beforw next time you come out :D

ill be getting ready to fill my turkey tags, start fishing, dog training. slowpitch all summer. i dont mind the off season at all. theres always something i can do outdoors to pass the time till season starts.

Work on HABITAT , toss in a Kite Festival or two, do a little fishing , oh shoot lots of P. dogs (not so endangered just ask the rancher living next to the 30 square mile dog town in eastern Pennington Co. South Dakota). But mostly work on my Habitat projects.

Post-Season Depression

It's tough to cope with the end of the season. But I am better able to concentrate on work. Will hunt for two toms in April.

Build flight pens, work dogs. Going to hit a few field trials, first next Sunday.
Plant 500.00 worth of seed for some habitat projects on the farm.
Get surrogator and incubator ready.
Fish and turkey hunt on the farm.
I built a 2 acre lake 3 years ago and it has perch, crappie, bass, channel cat 4 kinds of bluegills in it and they should be fun for me and the grand kids.
Not to mention back to the excavating and septic biz installations and sells.
We are still rabbit hunting one day a week till end of month:D:)

Best wishes, OandN.

My recipe for out-of-season sanity -->

January - February/March: Ice Fish and Turkey Hunt
March/April - May/June: Spring Crappie Bite, Bluegill Fish
June/July - September: Bluegill, Walleye, and Bass Fish, Running Races, Biking, etc.
October: Really concentrate on sharpening the dog's field skills

Run and lift at least 5-6 days per week, every week, to stay in shape for season. Dog joins me as weather and schedule allows.

Throw in shotgun season deer hunting in early December and life is good.

Old & new, stay on the mend. I'll do a little preserve hunting, (hopefully) start training a new pup, then while-away the hours with a fly rod.

That just leaves more time for all the other hobbies. Coming up: dog training, downhill and cross country skiing, and as it warms up, bicycling, golf, camping with the trailer, trout fly fishing, canoe fishing trip to the Boundary Waters in Minnesota, sporting clays, summer trap league, and backpacking/flyfishing trips to mountain lakes.

I spend mine doing some fishing, But shooting Summer Trap is my first love. Then there is the practice to keep shape in the league. So I spend a lot of time shooting. But I still miss more of the B-17 size Roosters than I like to admit.......Bob

Try crow hunting! seriously it is a blast. In Wyoming we can hunt them in January and February. Some states have tons of crows and guys shoot around 500 a day! To me it is like a mix between duck and coyote hunting in way. Get out there and try it.
Some guys are against taking your dogs because allegedly a crow can peck your dog in the eye during a retrieve. Just shoot once more when they hit the ground and you'll be good to go in my opinion. My dog loves it and it is great for working a dog on retrieves as well as sitting still while the birds are coming in. Don't spread the rumor too much though so we can keep it to our little hunting community. Soon enough it'll be as over crowded as the coyote hunting is now.

I have done a little crow hunting and it is a hoot! I will have to keep that in mind. I am planning my spring turkey hunt right now. I am gonna start getting out on the weekends and shooting yotes.

For me the habitat work begins. I had planned to plant a couple thousand shrubs and trees, but due to medical issues and associated financial issues, I am putting that off till Spring 2012. I will be working on that plan though and running two inch water lines, dirt work, fencing and a solar pump in prep for planting in 2012.

My routine habitat work will include tilling and planting about twenty miles of terrace channels to a variety of plants, including Egyptian wheat. I need to secure a source for my seed and hopefully a better price than last year on the EW. There will be some millet and sunflowers for the dove. I doubt if I will get around to doing any precribed burns and interseeding this spring.

My habitat work for the deer will include the usual maintenance of food plots of clover, alfalfa, chicory and small burnet. Will plant some brassicas also. I will be doing some TSI(timber stand improvement) along a wooded draw. I have various seeds and nuts in either the refrigerator or pots, including: Allegheny Chinkapins, Dwarf Chinkapin Oaks, Sawtooth Oak, Bur Oak, Persimmon and Pear. Wish I had some Heritage Oak(bur x English cross) acorns to start, but may purchase some potted trees this year. Will likely put out some potted Heritage Oak and London Plane Trees. Plan to start some hybrid poplar from cuttings.

That will keep me busy through the spring and summer, then come fall will be putting out food plots of triticale and Austrian winter peas.

Would like to build a shooting house this year.

So, I should not lack for things to do, just lack the time and money to do it.

lots to do...

O&N - We're praying for you. Get in your exercise and we hope to be hearing stories from you in the fall.

It's been a drag being dogless, but my friend the breeder called Friday to tell me his dog is in heat, as expected. Until the puppy comes home I'll be finishing some remodeling in the house, ice fishing, just completed a scuba diving course and am headed to the Caribbean on a scuba trip in late March, then turkey hunting, golf starts, spring walleye fishing and that should get me to puppy training time. I can't wait!
