It's not news!

I just want to vent about hearing the same news every year in California. Right now its about the freezing temperatures in the valley and the potential damage to citrus grown hear. NEWS FLASH, if freezes every year in the valley. If citrus growers can't deal with it they should grow another crop or move their operation south.

Next it will be rain and hail while the alomonds and stone fruit are blooming, again THIS HAPPENS EVERY YEAR! ITS NOT NEWS!.

Then there will be the stories about staying hydrated when temperatures reach 110. Then it will be about roads being slick after the first rain and damage to the raisins on the ground and cotton not yet harvested. Then a storey on driving safe in the fog and finally we will come full circle with the freeze damage to citrus.

Are these things really "news" when they happen every year at the same time just like clock work?

The news is the news, they are suckers for anything and blow things out of proportion. As a member of the produce industry who works with a lot of different farmers and commodities yes every year there is something in some crop but the most damaging thing that can happen is freeze. The freeze had very little effect on citrus but what you will see starting this week is lettuce is industry wide shortage. 1,000's of acres are lost and not recoverable. This will drive prices up significantly over the next 4-6 weeks. All that being said the reason why we work in this industry is because no two days or seasons are alike. God controls more than we do and that is what makes it exciting. We deal with it but when all else fails people panic on prices

Very true. My farmer friends and family know the risks and take the good with the bad. I always know when the first rain is coming when I see raisin trays hitting the ground.:D

I have noticed many times like every year.
for instance. Mud slides in CA:eek: Brush fires in CA:( Floods, freeze, Tsunamis, Earth quakes. This stuff happens all the time "UP NORT MN", We don't get a word on the mainstream.

OPPS,:confused::o scratch the last two before mentioned disasters.

Lucky! Sometimes I wonder why I even bother watching the news.

Because you just gotta know if your fellow peasants are still on the same, steady diet of BS. Maybe that's what's causing the obesity epidemic in America.....too many empty calories or trans-fats in bovine fecies:D

LOL....QH, what they do to us every winter is explain how driving in the snow is slippery and we should make sure we have hats and gloves when we go outside. Oh! And don't forget those slippery sidewalks.

What in the world would we do without our media warning us how the snow makes roads slippery and when it's cold out we should wear our little hats and gloves. I swear, at times I think the Chicago media thinks we're all a bunch of children. Bundle up little ones:D

This is a good thread.

I've always said the best Job in AZ, is a weatherman. 8 months of the year all you have to say is, " I'ts going to be Fricken Hot today". You'll be 99.9% correct most of the time. :D

And glad to have it that way. That's why we do not "live" in California.
KELO does carry on a bit about the weather tho sometimes, especially any possibility for a tornado.

Congratulations on not living in "living" in California.

Thank You! It's mostly a political issue. The State is beautiful.

I think this is a big misconception of California, that the state as a whole is liberal. While its true for the areas of high population (L.A., the bay and Sacremento) I think you would be amazed to know the rest of the state is very conservative, or at least right of center. The Valley is full of dust bowl Okies who brought their guns and Bibles with them but we are now out numbered, kind of like the rest of the country.

I am not directing this at you UB because I hope you don't feel this way but I'm sick of people who think they're some how more American than I am simply because they were "fortunate" enough to be born and raised in another state

We have 2 kids in LA so we spend some time out there. Their apartment looks out over the Marina. Marina del Rey is walking distance from Venice Beach. (CA number 2 attraction) after Disney Land. Not much down time while we're out there, Kids have a lot of things to show us.
Takes what? about 3 hours traveling East to get out of the city.
We spent a couple days at 29 Palms and Joshua Tree NP. Then took side Roads North and back West. Lots of barren country out there. Saw several coveys of Quail, didn't seem like much else for wildlife.

You were on the east side of the sierras primarily in the great basin on the way home. There are some nice big desert mulies, pronghorns, a few elk and even a few desert big horns out there but they aren't stacked on the side of the roads like they are in other states. Biggest mulie I've ever seen was in Joshua Tree.

I understand and commiserate with the situation in California. You have to figure out a way to get your government back.
Ever wonder why the Senate is Demo and the House Republican? the House Districts are small enough to represent a locality whereas the big Senate Districts include overwhelming urban influence. Our only hope as nation or State is a strong House and or a Republican Govenor.

Yea it's fun out here on the Left-Coast! I am only blocks from D-Land and summer traffic is always measured in time not miles, here in La-La land. There is a lot of life in the Desert around the south . You have to look close and early or late in the day. I was always scaring up big mules driving on on power-line roads even in the city you would be surprised how much is out there. The news has to report something to fill the hours of newscast or there would be a lot more unemployed here. I watch our local Weather woman ,Jackie J just to see what she will ware next!
